The work is constituted by the performance
of the well-know aria “Un bel dì vedremo” from Madama Butterfly by G.Puccini sung in ‘Farfallino’. The opera
is widely recognized as one of the most infamous example of orientalism and imperialist sexism.
The protagonist Cho Cho-san, namely Madama Butterfly, is the quintessential example of the stereotype
of an exotic-erotic, infantilized, male-serving Japanese female body. Lastly in the opera, the US officer,
Mr Pinkerton will “rip out the wings of the butterfly”.
On the contrary, in my film I try to explore if there
is a possibility to escape mechanisms of othering through
the disruption of direct communication, both by singing
and distortion of words.
A collaboration with soprano singer Marion Dumeige,
pianist Artistide Moari and sound engineer Giammarco Gaudenzi.
