Spirit Talks is a series of short, black-and-white 16mm films shot over the span of three years and edited in a five-channel spatial installation. These videos are inspired by the history of ‘spirit photography’, where, coeval to the initial diffusion of the photographic medium, a big interest in spiritism arose. At the time, many female channelers gained the attention of the positivist scientific community who wanted to use photography as a way to prove or disprove the magical summonings. On the one hand, positivist scientists who focused on invisible matters—such as electricity, the subconscious, or spirits—in the attempt to categorize and name the existing. On the other hand, individual women, mostly illiterate, poor, outcasts, and queer, were finding agency in mediumship as a profession and as a craft.
